I Want to Make my Own Website – Now What?

May 22, 2013 2 Comments

How many times have you heard yourself say this, “I want to make my own website”? Maybe you are looking at your friend’s awesome blog, see his daily thoughts and say to yourself, ‘Wow, I can do this too’ and ‘I want my own website.’ Maybe you are a small business owner and you noticed that your competition has websites all over the place. Worse, their websites appear when you do a local search for that particular type of business. Seeing that would prompt the expressions above. The great news is that making your own website is not as complicated and expensive as you may think. In fact, you don’t need to be a geek or rocket scientist to put up a nice-looking website. The tools are available online for you to put up a professional-looking website in no time at all. In fact, a lot of these tools are completely free. Here are just basic steps that you need to follow to put up a nice-looking website as quickly as possible.

1. Get the right hosting

Hosting is basically a service that you buy which hosts your website on a computer so that when people look for your website, they will find it. It is basically your website’s online digital home. There are many hosting providers available which are fairly cheap. Look for one that has good reputation and can keep your website up almost all the time. In my opinion, when you just start out, Bluehost is the best option for you. It gives you unlimited bandwidth, unlimited space and the best is – your domain is already included.

Go to Bluehost and register your domain now

2. Get the right domain name

Your domain name is the address of your website. When they think of your website, they think of your domain name (e.g. the domain name here is LivingForMondays.com, so basically what you see in your browser’s address bar). Make sure that you pick a domain name that is catchy, easy to remember and actually captures the essence of your business. If you already have an existing business, just convert that name into a domain name by adding a “.com” at the end and taking out the spaces. Just be sure to leave out hyphens if you can and everything that makes it complicated to type when you just say it out loud.

3. Use WordPress

WordPress is a free blogging platform. Don’t get scared by that label. You don’t have to blog to use it. It can actually be used for static websites as well. The reason that I am recommending using it is that it is 100% free, easy to upload and install, is very flexible and easy to manage by a few clicks of your mouse to change the look and content.

4. Pick a web host that has WordPress integrated

Many webhost that has WordPress integrated in them allows you to click a few times and enter certain parameters to quickly have a WordPress blog installation up.

Use these tips to get your website up quickly so that you no longer have to say that you want to make your own website. You can do it with WordPress.

That is what Bluehost also offers – in no time you have your blog up, it’s just a click on the button.

If you subscribe for our newsletter, you’ll even get a free course with a step by step instruction about how to do it.

The content on the website must be informative, unique so that search engines will crawl them and rank your website in search engines for specific keywords.
Also we must keep in mind that the navigation should be very easy so that user doesn’t get annoyed while browsing your site.

Nice article and great tips. I think the most important tip is to choose the right keyword for the domain name. This is not always easy to do with so many websites that have already chosen good keyword names.
