Twitter Tips for Traffic Generation

May 14, 2013 2 Comments

Ever since Twitter launched several years back, people have found a way to make money by using it for traffic generation. A lot of people use Twitter. It has millions and millions of users and it’s very popular. Furthermore, very influential people use twitter to get the message out. That’s why it is a very tempting pool of free traffic that you can tap into driving traffic to your websites, blogs or online tools. You just have to know the right ways and have the right philosophy of driving traffic from Twitter. The right philosophy for Twitter is obviously not to spam. If you are intent on just using Twitter and abuse it for spamming purposes, you are basically wasting your time. Sooner or later they will find it out and you get banned. Not only that, the product or the service that you are promoting online will develop a corroded brand. You don’t want a tainted brand because as the Internet matures, online brands are the next big thing. Whatever you do online must build your online brand instead of eroding it. When you blast irrelevant content to people who don’t want it, you are eroding your brand. Your goal on Twitter must be to constantly build up your brand.

These are just some tips on how you can use Twitter for traffic generation

  1. As on every other social media platform Twitter is a content stream like a newspaper. People choose which content to consume and follow or unfollow you to receive your news. If you send high-quality tweets, people will stay on your content stream. But if you just send links to your website it will look spammy. High-quality tweets must fill a particular need of people who you want to respond. This is the bottom line and this is what separates spam from great content. Does it meet a need? Is it helpful, relevant or timely? Many spammers do not get it. They just keep sending the same garbage over and over again. They think that people will click on their link and they somehow will make money. It doesn’t work that way. You have to address the needs of the receivers so that they can do what you want them to do. I think the best thing to keep in mind is – if you don’t want to be treated like this yourself, don’t treat someone else this way. Use Twitter what it is actually for – sharing news. Don’t hesitate to share content from other people’s sites. This way you can easily start to interact with them.
  2. Design your tweets so they get retweeted. The power of Twitter is not so much of you being able to send to a group of people. Your sphere of influence is fairly small. Throughout the life of an account, the number of followers is fairly limited. However, the power of a re-tweet is what you should be looking for. For every person that follows you, there are other people who follow that person. What happens is that when that person republishes the stuff that you have twitted, this starts a chain reaction that blows up the potential audience pool of your tweet. That’s why it’s extremely important that you tweet to get re-tweeted. This means that you have to really pay attention to the content that you are sending out. At the very least, it must grab people’s attentions, fulfill a need and must be easy to re-tweet. Once you meet those criteria, and you keep perfecting that formula, your message will reach different places that you never thought existed.
  3. Tweet with branding in mind. Whatever you do online must be a mind towards branding. Your online brand is your most important digital property. You cannot conduct yourself online in such a way that destroys your brand. You do this when you are irresponsible, send spam or if you are rude online. You just have to treat all people professionally. And this means sending out content that makes sense, is relevant and helps people at many different levels. If you do this, you build up your brand. If you don’t do this, your brand stagnates or worse, it dies.
  4. Another point to keep in mind: Interact regularly. Not everyone is on Twitter every day, yet every hour. So you can tweet the same messages 2-3 times per day but don’t forget to mix it up with other content, a quote, a question, or whatever you think your audience likes.

If you like to dig into this topic deeper, there are some eBooks on Amazon (there are tons of great eBooks for Internet Marketing), which don’t cost more than a magazine. I got some for myself and here are the most helpful Twitter books:
