How to Make Money on your Own

May 22, 2013 1 Comment

This might be your scenario before you decide to make money on your own:

If you are a typical employee, you know how hard it can sometimes be getting up in the morning to go to work. You have to hassle through traffic and have to rush to get to work on time. It just sometimes seems that the hours tend to drag on if you are stuck at a job that you hate. The truth is that if you are feeling like this, you are not alone. The vast majority of people working for other people are not happy. They would rather own their time, do what they want to do and get paid. Unfortunately, most people don’t pull the trigger on that dream. They don’t get off the fence and take action about working for themselves. As a result, the vast majority of people continue to work for others and be resentful. If only all that pent-up disappointment was left at your office, maybe it would be a happy story. Unfortunately, a lot of the discouragement, disappointment, personal pain and humiliation you would feel in working translates to the rest of your life. Eventually, you become a really unhappy person and find it hard to be happy for other people. Eventually you can become very negative. All these are symptoms shared by people who are not happy with the things that they do for a living. If you want to be self-employed, you have to first remember that you need to decide to learn now and to figure it out. You will soon find out that it is not as easy as you think.

Here are the steps if being an entrepreneur is something for you:

1. Take an assessment of your life

You have to take an emotional assessment of your life right now. Are you happy? Do you like what you do and what you have become? Do you feel that you are disappointed of yourself and with what you do? Do you think that you could be doing much better? Write this down and be honest with yourself. If the answer is no, you can then go to step 2.

2. Decide your options

There are many different options at your fingertips. Don’t think that self-employment and making money on your own is the only option. You can go back to school, get re-training or join the military if you’re young enough. There are just so many options. Don’t think that your options are limited. Part of what makes people feel miserable is that they feel that they have limited options. You have to decide on which options to go with.

3. Fully decide

Once you have a small group of options, then you have to look at your values and dreams. Compare them and cross-reference to see which option fits best with the particular type of personal value and then you go with that. If you have decided to make money on your own, then you have to make sure that you have the right values for it. You have to have a lot of patience, creativity and flexibility. Self-employment is easy to dream about but hard to pull off. You have to remember that reality. It is not going to be a cake walk. It is going to be a challenge, but if you have the right values and personality, then you should definitely decide on this direction.

If you decide to set up your own business, check out the book (also kindle edition available) “The Learn Startup” by Erick Rise. It is not just for beginning entrepreneurs.

From my own experience I know how it feels to be totally unhappy with your job. I was self-employed and had my own private lessons agency teaching children from 2 pm to 8 pm (which is a nice time actually) but I hated to start late in the day because I’m an early bird. With time it made me ill. I got totally burned out until I decided to do what I love – and never looked back.

I often miss “my” children but then, I totally love the freedom I have today. And I discovered that I can also teach online, here at the Academy 😉

It is totally possible to build up a small business while you still have your nine to five job. You just need commitment. But you do not need to jump into “cold water”. What you might need though is a plan so starting with help might be your option. Check out the Academy and let me help you to LOVE Mondays!
